| Who remembers last month's quiz? I'll repeat
it here for those of you who didn't see our last issue:
*****
Sorry, Elaine. I had to take my daughter, the soccer player, in
to have her wrist x-rayed. She smashed into the goalie last night
at her game.
Well, Kelly, we here at the Hpathy Quiz know
all about your extracurricular activities!
Yes, and, if I may speak extracurricularly for a moment....
If you can, please do!
I wanted to just thank all of our readers for the nice letters
they sent in requesting more quiz cases and asking why I have been
noticeably absent in recent months...
What letters!?
You haven't gotten letters?
Well, yeah, we've gotten letters, we got
letters alright, here's one now: "Dear Hpathy Quiz, the Quiz
has never been better! The new kid is great! Keep up the good work!
Sincerely, Shana Lewis"
Isn't Shana your daughter? And isn't she the "new kid"
of whom she speaks?
You must be thinking of another Shana Lewis.
I think it's time for me to start my case.
If you can, please do!
I call this case, "Freight Train and the Fever".
Are you aware that "Freight Train"
was a song made poplular by Peter, Paul and Mary?
Well, at the risk of sounding like a complete moron, no, I did
not know that. Now, if I can possibly begin.... You don't have anymore
announcements, do you? So.... The other day my son, let's just call
him Freight Train--if there are no objections to that-- came down
with a fever. He had a soccer game that morning and had been playing
at a team mate's house all afternoon.
What?! He was playing soccer at a team mate's
house???
No, Elaine, he was playing at a team mate's house!
Playing what?
I don't know!!!
Well, therein lies the problem!
What problem?! Nevermind, I think it's best that I move on.
If you can, please do!
So, a few hours later I picked him up from the friend's house and
knew immediately that he wasn't well. He had the flu, I think--it
came on like a freight train! His face was deep red as were his
ears. I could feel the heat steaming from his head and body! His
eyes were watering and he said, "Mom, I'm not feeling too good".
When we got home, I checked his temperature which was 103.5 degrees.
He was chilly, a little dizzy when he stood up and not very thirsty.
He did drink some icy cold water when offered it. Having no appetite
earlier, he hadn't eaten any dinner.
I gave doses of _____________30c, a total of 4 times within the
hour. When the profuse sweat broke out on his face, I knew the fever
had begun coming down. A few moments later he vomited. I began to
worry but then he fell asleep and, minus one smaller episode of
vomiting, slept through the night peacefully. His fever was all
but gone the next morning and by that evening, Freight Train was
back on track.
So, that's the case Elaine.
---------------------------------------------------
How did we do this time? Here's
the vote count:
Belladonna--12
Gelsemium--5
Aconite--4
Phosphorus--3
Pulsatilla--1
Arsenicum--1
Nux vomica--1
Apis--1
And the winner, with 12 votes, is...... Belladonna!
There would have been even more, but some of you came up with clever
reasons NOT to vote for Belladonna! For example, there was Pauline,
who said,
"And the answer is gelsemium as you wouldn’t
do another belladonna case so soon.........."
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Pauline has solved the case using psychotherapy!
(applause-applause!) Sorry, Pauline, I'd do 20 Belladonna cases
in a row--I'm that lazy!
And here's another clever quiz participant--Sameer. He admits that
it SEEMS like a Belladonna case, but he went for the strange,
rare and peculiar instead, "...like the old masters taught
us...", namely, "desires ice cold drinks but is not thirsty"
which led him to choose Phosphorus. There's just one problem: "Freight
Train" only drank the ice cold water because it was given to
him, he didn't even ask for it! We can't make anything out of this
symptom! Sameer also chose Phosphorus because of the symptom, "gastric
fever", this apparently because of the vomiting at the end.
Now, again, it seems you really CAN'T have too many Belladonna cases,
can you? Because as I explained in my last Belladonna case, where
the child with the Belladonna fever took the remedy and vomited,
this is NOT part of the case! This is the curative response to the
remedy! This is the remedy working; don't our remedies cause discharges?
People cry after remedies, they perspire, they get skin eruptions--all
examples of discharging. The vomiting is not part of this
case!
For our Apis voter, Apis and Belladonna can look alike, but Apis
is an allergic remedy and Belladonna is more for infections. I think
the Nux vomica person was, again, thinking about the vomiting, as
well as the Arsenicum voter.
Gelsemium. I know that as soon as Kelly said "the flu",
a lot of you said, "Gelsemium!" But Gelsemium lacks something
really important in this case--SUDDEN ONSET (hence the name "Freight
Train": "It came on like a freight train!") Gelsemium
doesn't have this sudden onset. And I know the ice cold water made
some of you vote for Phosphorus.
Very quickly, a Belladonna fever in a child looks like this:
Heat, dry heat, so hot you can feel the heat before you even touch
the child! Redness, and Sudden Onset, and here's an interesting
point that only one of our readers picked up: Ailments from being
out in the hot sun! Thanks to Nishita Gupta for that.
And now, here's what some of our winners had to say:
Hi Elaine!!
Sudden onset...reddenning of face and ears...heat steaming from
head and body..watering of eyes......i'd go for Belladonna..
Regards,
-Akanksha Agnihotri.
Hi,
Play whole afternoon in heat of sun
Heat stage-Hot flushes all over body with
red face
Chill stage- Chilly with dizzy and a bit
thirsty for icy cold water
Sweat stage-Sweat all over face with vomiting
So i think Belladona 30c
will cure the fever in the night itself.
Nishita Gupta
Hi Elaine, I think Freight Train must have
needed a dose of Belladonna.
Sudden onset, congestion to the head and
face - face discolouration dark red, Radiating heat, thirstless,
vertigo on rising, eyes lachrymation, chilly.
Cheers, Deb.
Hi Elaine,
I think the remedy this month is Belladonna.
Rapid onset < 3pm, intense heat on affected parts, lack of thirst.
Best wishes,
Mary-Jane Sharratt

Hi Elaine, I believe Freight Train received
Bell. Using Kent in homeoint, I obtained 21/9 for Bell and 14/6
for Ars. Face,
discoloration, red during fever; face, discoloration, dark red;
and eye, lachrymation during fever all ruled out Ars. However, Fever,
burning heat alternating with chilliness took the cake with 3 for
Bell as the only remedy.
Jerry Field
Hi Elaine,
So, for the sudden, high fever with radiating
heat, redness of the face and ears, I would recommend Belladona.
Thank you again for taking the time to write
and educate us further.
