Revisiting: "No One Said Being A Homeopath Was Easy!"

-- Elaine Lewis CHom

Don't tell me you missed last month's quiz!!! Here it is again with the answer to follow:

-------------------------------------------------

Shana, you are not going to believe this! I was at Whole Foods today....

Mom, you better tell people what "Whole Foods" is.

OK. It's a health food store the size of a supermarket, and quite grand, I must say. Shana, get a picture.

Check!

So, there I was, standing in the checkout line--Shana, get a picture!

Check!

So I was standing in the checkout line, minding my own business, not paying attention to what was going on, when all of a sudden I hear the bagger saying to the checkout lady, "What is this, 'Happy Days'?" referring to the music being piped into the store.

Mom, you better tell people what "Happy Days" is.

OK. Happy Days is a TV comedy from the '70's about the '50's. Shana, get a picture!

Check!

So that's when I realized that Ricky Nelson's white-bread version of "I'm Walkin'" was playing over the sound system!

Isn't that a Fats Domino song?

Yes it's a Fats Domino song, that's my whole point! (Shana, get a picture of Ricky Nelson.)

Check!

So, the bagger says, "Everybody knows that rock 'n' roll stinks before the Beatles!"

Oh my God!

Yes, my sentiments exactly!

Do we need a picture of The Beatles?

No, Shana, even the 20-year-old bagger knew who The Beatles were! So, I blurted out, "THAT'S A FATS DOMINO SONG! FATS DOMINO, NOT RICKY NELSON!!!!!" (Shana, get a picture of Fats Domino!)

Check!

So what happened?

I was met with blank stares and mild incredulity.

Well, Mom, no one ever said that being a homeopath was going to be easy....

You are so right, Shana! Why do we even bother?

I don't know, I just don't know.....

........

........

........

Mom, what are we doing?

Wait a minute, don't tell me, don't tell me...tell me!

Do we have any sick people this month?

Oh, of course we do Shana, this is the Hpathy Quiz, after all!  Oddly enough, we're back with Gabi again, only this time it's her son, Santiago. He's only about 5 years old and has some sort of virus. Here's what Gabi wrote:

Hi again, Elaine. Santi had just come out of the bath and I had wrapped him up and put him in his pj’s and robe and put him to bed under the duvet. I know it's a bit much but the house was cold and with wet hair I was afraid he would get sick. He had been a bit complainy all day but I had not paid much attention to it. This was at night.

So, I go to look in on him after I finish putting things away. He was asleep. His face was bright red! I touched him and he was really hot; so, I proceeded to undress him a bit and uncover him and I gave him Belladonna without even thinking about it. (Between you and me Elaine, I am running out of potencies so you will surprised here at what I have been using.) I gave him a 200c and there was no real improvement. I figured that with such a high potency he should be calmer and less agitated right away (he kept moving and going up and down and in and out of the covers) so next I gave Sulphur for the redness…dumb me. No reaction. I waited about 20 minutes to give it some thought.

He happened to be sleeping with his mouth open so I decided to smell his breath and it was very strong; so, I finally put two and two together, also recalling that I had noticed his tongue was white and gave one dose of ____________ 1M, (yes, I know, a little high but that was all I had). He calmed down instantly and fell asleep. That's it!!!!

So....what is it? Do you know the remedy? Write to me at LEWRA@aol.com and let me know; the right answer will be in next month's ezine. Shana, get up that video of Fats Domino with Ricky Nelson joining him on "I'm Walkin'"!

Check!  (Eat your heart out, Beatles!)

How did we do? Here are our vote totals:

Mercury-7

Arsenicum-5

Ant-c.-3

Nux vomica-2

Aconite-2

Gels.

Cham.

Kali mur.

Pulsatilla

Rhus tox

It looks like our crack team of homeopaths was right again! Yes, it was Mercury! How did we know? Of course the bad breath gave us our first clue. But what else? For me, it was the "under the covers/out of the covers" behavior that solved the mystery! A lot of you saw it as "restlessness", undoubtedly, and picked Arsenicum; but, you could also see it as Mercury's famous "narrow range of temperature tolerance"! They're cold so they put the covers on, two seconds later, they're hot, so they throw the covers off, and so it goes. They would do the same thing with the thermostat, or opening and closing the windows if they could. So, we had two big keynotes for Mercury here. Let's congratulate our winners:

  • Caralyn
  • Abby Beale
  • Chris Gregory
  • Lowanna
  • Maria Georgas
  • Sinead

Unfortunately, someone didn't sign their email, but here's what he or she said. While we're at it, let's look at this person's choice of rubrics:

Dear Elaine,

According to the following rubrics the remedy can be Merc.

[Boenning ] [Face]Red:Bright:

I looked in Boenninghausen's repertory and there were only two remedies under Face, red, bright--Bell. and Stram. Under Face, red, there are 130 remedies, many of them in bold, making this a useless rubric.

[Boenning ] [Fever]Pathological types:Inflammatory:

How do we know this? Don't make assumptions. In fact, the presence of bad odors in a case usually suggests that the pathology is not inflammatory but, more likely, septic.

[Boenning ] [Mouth and throat]Tongue:Coated (not clear):White:

There are 80 remedies in this rubric, many of them in bold, making this a useless rubric as well.

[Boenning ] [Mouth and throat]Mouth (buccal cavity), in general:Odour from, bad breath, etc.:
[Boenning ] [Sensation and complaints in general]Infants:Fever:

Santi's not an infant. But again, fevers in children? Too large a rubric. Too general. Not useful.

[Boenning ] [Sleep]Sleep:Restless:

Restless sleep? Mercury's only a 1 for that in Murphy's Repertory; I couldn't find it in Boenninghausen's, it's too large a rubric anyway.

[Boenning ] [Sleep]During sleep,:Mouth:Open:

I didn't see a sleep chapter in Boenninghausen's repertory. I checked the mouth chapter and under mouth, open, there was no subrubric "during sleep". In Murphy's Repertory, I did find, Mouth: open, sleep, during and Merc. was there as a 1.

[Boenning ] [Time]Time:Night:

Night time aggravation is too big a rubric with 149 remedies and most of them in bold.

[Boenning ] [Sensation and complaints in general]Burning:Of external parts:

With 122 remedies, most of them in bold, this is another useless rubric.

[Boenning ] [Sensation and complaints in general]Ill, sense of being(sick feeling, etc.):

No, really! "I feel sick" is a totally useless symptom for homeopaths.

[Boenning ] [Sensation and complaints in general]Restlessness:Corporal:

Restlessness, too large a rubric. 92 remedies, half of them in bold and if I looked in Murphy's...well, let me look.... Over 400 remedies, a meaningless, useless rubric; it means practically every remedy is restless in one sense or another.

Dr. B, I guess you can't remind people often enough of Paragraph 153 of the Organon: "...the most striking, strange, rare, peculiar signs and symptoms in the case are almost exclusively the ones to which close attention should be given .... More general and indefinite symptoms, such as loss of appetitie, headache, weakness, troubled sleep, discomfort, etc., if not more precisely qualified, deserve little attention because one finds something general of the kind in almost every disease and almost every medicine."

What do our winners--including "Anonymous"-- get, Dr. B?
