| Case 2 A case of severe hiccough.
About twenty five years ago a labourer about forty years of age
was brought to my clinic; he was suffering from a very severe attack
of hiccough for the past few days. When the paroxysm used to start
a number of hiccoughs used to come one after the other so fast that
he was unable to take a breath. I gave him Nux
vomica 200 but it did not show any relief. The paroxysm were
so severe that they were causing anxiety let the fellow suffocate.
Now I put a dose of Magnesia phos. 1M
on his tongue (I give three or four globules of No. 10 size in a
little Sugar of Milk as a dose). And seeing the severity of the
paroxysms of his hiccoughs I advise the accompanying persons to
take him to the emergency service of the Govt. General Hospital
if he does not find any relief within the next half an hour.
Next day report came that by the time he reached his home less
than a kilometer away, the hiccoughs stopped altogether never to
return again.
Editor's note : medicines like Nux-vomica,
Kali brom and Mag-phos are among the most commonly used medicines
for hiccoughs. Nux-vomica works better in cases of hiccups with
some gastric trouble and Mag-phos works well because of its specific
action in spasmodic disorders. The greater the intensity of the
spasm, more is Mag-phos indicated.

Some excerpts from Comparative Materia Medica by CANDEGABE E. F.
Disease is a reaction of the defense
mechanism, and mental disturbance - the foundation of all physical
symptomatology - arises from the conflict created between the promptings
of the syphilitic miasm to destruction and death, or of the sycotic
miasm to selfishness and egotism, and the constraints imposed upon
the individual by society.
His true self - a being of dynamism,
depth and intuition - is masked by the personality, and it can be
detected only through observation of his behaviour, the way he relates
to those around him, his dreams, fantasies and ambitions, and his
weakness.
[cd1] - The homoeopath must take note of all of these, not for their
dramatic interest but for the clues which will lead to an understanding
of the patient's inner being.
[cd1] - It is the subconscious workings of the psyche which determine
the nature and functioning of the conscious mind.
[cd1] - The general symptoms and modalities of the case, such as
food desires and aversions, the reactions to certain kinds of weather,
to heat and to cold, all serve to maintain and defend the patient's
status quo. (Foreword - by Dr Tomas Pablo Paschero)
