However, for the sake of argument, let's assume that these claims
are true, that they wrongly prescribe antibiotics because of some
pressure from the patient, then still who holds the blame? If a
physician prescribes an antibiotic for a viral condition knowing
it won't be effective, knowing there are risks to all prescriptions,
including sometimes fatal allergic reactions, and knowing that it
is a contributory factor in the global threat of resistant microbes
then imagine the unethical implications. Not only unethical but
downright dangerous, and all because their patients "demand"
it? Please! Physicians are ultimately in control of ALL prescription
drugs given to their patients. They hold the responsibility for
proper prescribing and if any antibiotics are given in circumstances
that can be deemed inappropriate then the fault lies solely with
them, whether the patient requests them or not.
Okay, so where does the patient's responsibility lie in all of
this? We are responsible for educating ourselves on proper treatment
for viral infections which does not include the use of antibiotics.
It is our responsibility to question our physicians if antibiotics
are given to be sure the infection is in fact bacterial. If we choose
to take antibiotics for an infection it is important to finish the
whole course to avoid leaving behind any bacteria because if even
one in a billion bacteria cells is able to survive exposure to an
antibiotic by becoming resistant, then its descendants will quickly
reproduce. Bacteria evolve rapidly and under ideal conditions can
double their numbers in only twenty minutes.
It is our responsibility to learn as much as we can about our bodies
and what goes into them. When we do have a virus we are responsible
for treating it using methods that are health promoting and risk
- free. Of course there are rather simple methods that can be used
for treating a viral infection and these include; bed-rest, increase
in fluids, nutritious diet, and vitamin and mineral supplements
and of course homeopathic care. Since discovering homeopathy all
my children's ear infections have been treated without antibiotics,
all colds and flu's have successfully responded to homeopathy. I
have not had the need to resort to antibiotics for my family or
myself since learning homeopathy.
For the treatment of the common cold, influenza, ear infections,
sore throats, and upper respiratory infections homeopathy is very
effective and can be learnt at home. For more serious infections
the care from a professional homeopath is required.
Antibiotic resistance is a global crisis and one that we all need
to be concerned about. With homeopathy we lessen the usage of inappropriate
antibiotic treatment and also have a heavy arsenal for treating
the resistant microbes that have become a threat to our world.
