Topic: E.A. Farrington - Clinical Materia Medica Posted: 14 April 09 at 02:06 |
I have a copy of 'A Clinical Materia Medica' by E A Farrington, M.D. to which I refer from time to time and have found it useful too.
On the board here I have not heard any reference to Farrington and wish to know from
Practitioners here on their views and experience with this writings.

Dear onxy
His other book: comparitive Materia Medica is even better. Farrington created those books from reading other works. He died young. Nash's leaders are more concise --

Thanks. Nash's leaders and Harvey Farrington's books are good ones. Please go through Pierce 'Plain talks on materia medica.

One of the big advantage of " 'Plain talks on materia medica' is that its repertory correlate with the materia medica.I would say this is the only one.

Farringtons lesser writings is a great book to read n in that he writes about atrophy of infants which is again very practical one.I like his comparative study also that common features of a family will be brought out very well so its easy to diffirentiate within the group like acids, ophidia etc. Also it will give an overview of lesser known drugs in that group.

you are right but most of the classical homeopath are against this practice. They do not like therapeutic hints.

Dear members
Farrington was what we call a desc-top operator -- a hoemopath working more in theoretical terms. he died all too early. he drew from Hering's: Gross comparative materia medica, which is worth looking into. hering is the translator.

Dr Farrington"s comparitive and Clinical materia medica both are gems of literature and provide insight for their identification in various clinical situations......it is worth reading and even better to apply in practise..........

No doubt. But it is not favourite of those people who say they treat the patient not the disease.

Treat the patient ,not the disease.
DR HAHNEMANN TREATED SCARLET FEVER WITH BELLADONNA,AND ASIATIC CHOLERA BY CAMPHOR,CUPRUM,VERTRUM ALB....
Only those who dont understand, say so....its better to say we treat diseased person.....and ways of selection or approach may be different but at least HOMOEOPATHICITY SHOULD BE IN PRESCRIPTION....
that will not confuse nand will boost the confidence of all...patients,physician and HOMOEOPATHY...
WHEN WE ALL HOMOEOPATHS WILL HAVE CLARITY IN OUR WORK WE WLL DEFEAT ANY OF THE OBJECTIONS...AND WILL CONTRIBUTE BETTER IN FIGHTING DISEASE AND PROMOTING HEALTH...

The diseased person is inded the one who needs treatment. Terms like Cholera or Dysentery, scarlet fever or measles are actually syndrome names that include all varieties in which the syndrome may appear in an epidemic. A description of cholera should include all the symptoms with which it may present, so that proper selection of the remedy can always be performed. This does not diminish the fact one has to treat the individual, because t he symptoms may differ from individual to indidividual.Dr Piyush is right, when he states that: but at least HOMOEOPATHICITY SHOULD BE IN PRESCRIPTION....

And btw, Farrington's comparative MM is better than the other, because it gives examples how a syndrome may present itself in different people. Nash's "Leaders" is another comparative MM that shows this phenomenon.
In fact, alphabetic MM does not reflect homoeopathy proper. MM should be organised like Alphonse Teste did with his MM - remedies are grouped by symptom similarity. One is the head of a group and the others are like "satellites".
AW Woodward - although more allopath than homoeopath - also made a significant contribution to comparative MM in his groupings according to the different body systems, such as digestive, urinary, respiratory, etc. His idea was that remedies show symptoms first in one of those systems and they should be grouped according to that similarity. While falling short of symptom similarity like Nash, Farrington or Teste, it still provides an interesting read on a method that seeks to classify according to similarities.
