Homeopathy: It's Only Natural!

Samuel Hahnemann, MD invented the little sugar pellets we know
as homeopathic remedies nearly 200 years ago. In their first large-scale
test, these remedies were used to beat back an 1813 epidemic of
Typhus in Germany caused by the retreating army of Napoleon. Hahnemann
treated 180 cases, losing only two. The death rate in conventional
practice was over 30%!
 When
I tell people I'm a homeopath, they immediately confuse me with
herbalists and nutritionists and other types who dole out massive
quantities of vitamins and other pills. That just isn't homeopathy
at all, it's not even close.
If I could compare homeopathy with anything, it would be with the
very drugs you're taking right now to try to get well! You take
a drug because you want fast relief, you want to feel better now,
not a month from now; and this is exactly what homeopathy will do:
prompt resolution of fevers, infections, pain, swelling, etc., all
through the mobilization of your own immune system! If this sounds
too good to be true, think of what vaccines are--small amounts of
a disease injected to mobilize the immune system to fight the disease.
Homeopathy takes the vaccination principle to a broader level to
encompass the whole range of health problems; the difference being
that homeopathy is safe--using only minute sub-lingual doses (we
would never inject poisons into your body!). We've broadened the
concept from using just "disease against disease" to using
any substance that can cause a state of ill health and using it
against that state.
Think of the possibilities!
Anything that a substance can cause, it can cure in small doses!
Think of all the substances that "cause a state"--poison
ivy, snake venom (hemorrhaging), bee venom (swelling), alcohol...all
these are homeopathic remedies. They can all cure what they cause;
but there are thousands more! Every state of ill-health you can
imagine!
We have a remedy called Gelsemium (yellow jasmine) that
when given in overdose will cause all the common symptoms of the
flu! So, guess what our most often-used flu remedy is? And again,
just to remind you, it's not that Gelsemium "kills
flu germs", it's that it mobilizes your own immune system to
recognize your flu, to mobilize against your flu, and attack and
destroy it. What's more capable, more thorough, more knowledgable
about your body than your own immune system?
Let me give you an example. You have the flu and I have the flu.
You take your Motrin and I'll take my Gelsemium. We're
both going to get immediate relief! The difference is, you're going
to be saddled with Post-Viral Syndrome for suppressing a fever artificially,
while I'll be completely back to normal with no side-effects, no
ill-effects; no post-viral debility, just a natural and swift return
to health.
 Here's
a real-life incident: The first time I got the flu it was
a Saturday in December in the early 1980's. I was never so sick
in my life! Fever of 102, headache, muscle aches, sore throat, runny
nose, diarrhea, near collapse and great anxiety. I was calling all
over to get someone to stay with me and no one would! So, I spent
two of the worst days of my life alone and scared. I know now that
I had an 'Arsenicum' flu, but at the time I knew next to nothing
about homeopathy. Finally, on Monday morning, my boyfriend, Rick,
walked in the door, saw the piles and piles of used kleenex all
over the house and I could hear him say, "I knew it! I knew
it!" because he had had the flu the week before. He said, "You're
going to be fine in no time!" and he gave me two Excedrin.
Well, it was like a miracle! The headache went away, the fever went
down; it was like a tremendous weight had been lifted off of me!
The problem was that for months afterward, I was beset by odd, inexplicable
symptoms like diarrhea and chest pains that felt like arrows going
through my chest and giving me a fright! One day in the health food
store I noticed a line of homeopathic remedies in dropper bottles,
one of them was labeled simply, "Chest". Well, that's
good enough for me, I thought! I took it and the whole post-viral
syndrome melted away!
It might be sufficient to say: homeopathy is natural medicine
that works the way "real" medicine is supposed to; or:
what you expect from 'real' medicine is what you get from homeopathy!
Why is this so? (1) The dose is very small;
so small, it's actually 'energy-in-a-bottle' rather than substance,
per se, and works on the body's 'aura' or energy field rather than
through the digestive tract and so avoids the toxicity that plagues
the use of standard drugs! (2) The remedy is chosen based on its
similarity to what is wrong with you; meaning that in overdose,
it could cause what you have. This is one of life's paradoxes: 'Like
Cures Like'; and even if it makes no sense to you right
now, think of all the examples of "homeopathy" that are
familiar to you: Vaccinations, Allergy Shots, Ritalin for hyperactive
children (Ritalin is "speed"!). We call this "accidental
homeopathy". One day, some doctor is going to stumble on an
example of this, like, oh, I don't know, maybe finding out that
the reason quinine treats Malaria is because in over-dose it causes
the same symptoms, and say, "Hey! I think I've discovered something
here!" (Oh, wait. Samuel Hahnemann already did that!)
What will homeopathy treat?
Pretty much anything, including mental and emotional disorders--because
all we need is a substance that, in overdose, will cause (symptoms
similar to) what you have, and in that context, no state of ill-health
is incurable.
